How to add water to a car battery

The first step in maintaining the water in your battery is to shut off your vehicle and open the hood. Locate the battery and ensure it is clean. Most vehicle batteries are located on the left or right side of the vehicle at the front of the engine compartment. If the battery appears dirty, use a mixture of one cup water and one tablespoon of baking soda to gently clean any grime and dirt that may be on the battery or battery cables.

Next you will need to check the current water level in the battery. This is done by removing the caps on the top of the battery so the water level can be exposed. The caps are typically round or oblong in shape and are removed by gently prying them off or by unscrewing them depending on the battery type. Once the caps are removed, look into each uncovered hole and evaluate the level of water inside the battery. The level should be at or above the full level mark indicated on the front of the battery. If no marks are visible, the water level should reach the bottom of the caps. If the level is low, you will need to add water.

Add water to the battery by pouring distilled water slowly into the holes until the full level mark is reached. Only distilled water can be used as regular tap water could damage the battery. Once the water is at the correct level, secure the battery caps back onto the battery and the process is complete.
